Nicholls’ Laiche, McNeese’s Morrow, Hines Named Soccer Players of the Week

first_imgOffensive Player of the Week: Blaire Laiche, Nicholls – Sr. – Forward – Gonzales, La.Laiche posted the program’s first hat trick since the beginning of the 2016 season to fuel a 5-0 win over UAPB. Her first came on an unassisted goal in the 27th minute, and she netted her second and third scores within eight minutes of each other in the 63rd and 70th minutes. Following a recent move to an attacking role for the Colonels, Laiche’s four goals and eight points both pace the conference. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots. The Colonels (2-0-1) remained undefeated with a 5-0 drubbing of Arkansas-Pine Bluff this past sunday and look to stay out of the loss column on the road against Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m. Sunday. Goalkeeper of the Week: Kelly Hines, McNeese – Fr. – Cypress, TexasIn just her second career start, Hines made eight saves against SEC foe LSU, allowing just one shot to get by her on a penalty kick. She carried that momentum into Sunday’s start against Prairie View A&M, in which she kept the Panthers off the board in the first half with a save. Hines ranks second in the conference in save percentage (.818) and third in goals against average (.800). Defensive Player of the Week: Keely Morrow, McNeese – Jr. – Nevada, TexasMorrow was a dominating force in holding LSU to just one goal on a penalty kick on Friday and helped shutout Prairie View A&M on Sunday. She played the full 90 minutes in both matches. The Cowgirls look to ride that momentum into a two-match roadtrip against Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. Friday and at Arkansas at 1 p.m. Sunday.
