(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)With yesterday’s release of the preseason Coaches Poll via USA Today, college football season is upon us. We’re less than a month away from kickoff. And really, putting out polls before we’ve seen any of these teams play is a silly exercise. Inevitably, one of the teams around the top of the poll will wind up going 8-5, and there will be some team that is unranked right now that will factor into the national conversation. If preseason polls are going to exist, though, we may as well evaluate them.Based on what we know right now, these are the most overrated teams in the preseason Coaches Poll: A closeup of Urban Meyer on Ohio State's bench(Photo by Steven Branscombe/Getty Images)3. Ohio State BuckeyesOhio State is undoubtedly one of the most talented teams in the country. Its placement on my list is 100-percent a result of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Urban Meyer. I assume many of the votes were submitted prior to the current situation surrounding the legendary head coach.Meyer was recently placed on administrative leave as the school investigates the Zach Smith situation. As of now, it is unclear whether he will be reinstated before the start of the year, if he’ll be suspended a few games, or if he’ll be fired. People have various opinions on that, but as of now, he isn’t coaching the Buckeyes.Ohio State has two former head coaches on staff in offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano. Defensive assistant Alex Grinch, who joined the staff from Washington State, was rumored to be the choice to replace Mike Leach if he had left the Cougars. And Ryan Day, who was selected as interim head coach, is clearly an ascendant name in the coaching world.Still, no one in that group is Urban Meyer, one of the two or three best coaches in the sport. If he isn’t on the sideline this year, Day may pull a Lincoln Riley and the Buckeyes may still be great, but I don’t have the confidence to be comfortable with them at No. 3. If Meyer returns, forget I wrote any of this. Oklahoma players warming up before a game.(Photo by Brett Deering/Getty Images)5. Oklahoma SoonersLed by Baker Mayfield, the 2017 Sooners had one of the best offenses that college football has seen in some time. With Lincoln Riley entering year two, the Sooners should be able to put up points, especially in the Big 12.However, without Mayfield, it is hard to imagine OU having a historic offense again. Kyler Murray is very talented, but he’s largely unproven, and expecting him to be Baker Mayfield is very unfair. The Sooners defense should take a step forward, but it struggled last season. The Georgia College Football Playoff semifinal game drove that home. Oklahoma will be very good. No. 5? That is an extremely high bar for a team that has a ton to replace from a playoff team.NEXT: 3 More Overrated Teams >>>Pages: Page 1 Page 2last_img
