a2 Milk is smart milk for your dumb stomach

first_imgIn the beginning, there were cows and they made milk. It was pretty good. But then humans got involved and, unsurprisingly, we ruined everything. As we domesticated cows we inadvertently caused their milk to gain a new, mutant A1 protein alongside the original A2 protein. And because the universe loves irony, it turns out A1 may be the source of all your milk problems. At least, that’s what the folks at A2 Milk are saying. Fortunately, the company’s namesake product is the smart milk you need for your dumb stomach.A2 Milk recently swung by the Geek.com office to pitch us on this dairy dream. The company was founded by New Zealand doctor Corran McLachlan who made the connection between pure A2 cows and milk that caused less discomfort. The theory goes that many people who think they are lactose intolerant but haven’t been diagnosed are actually experiencing negative reactions (stomach aches, IBS, skin reactions) to the A1 protein. So A2 Milk’s farms have nothing but A2 cows. This way customers have access to a consistent source of more digestible milk. Plus, farms are encouraged to treat the special cows more humanely since the entire business rests on the continued existence of this particular milk. The dairy industry as a whole is shifting in this direction, but the transition has been bumpy. It’s like moving from USB 3.0 to USB-C, but with milk, and A2 Milk is Apple.Because A2 Milk is still milk with all the same nutrients and not some substitute like drought-causing almond milk or techno-nightmare Soylent, you can use it how you’d use regular milk: Whole or skim, as yogurt or ice cream, even in baby formula or soft cheeses. Apparently, hard cheeses are tough because of some tricky bacterial science. A2 is currently pursuing more tests to determine any other concrete health benefits of the product. We’re also not sure if it lasts any longer than regular milk.Fun fact, I actually hate milk. Not because I can’t drink it, but because I think it tastes gross and have made peace with my brittle bones. So A2 milk isn’t for me. It also isn’t for anyone who is medically diagnosed as lactose intolerant. Even without the A1 protein, the lactose will cause a bad reaction. However, we did give an A2 Milk sample to a coworker who isn’t lactose intolerant but takes Lactaid to deal with dairy dilemmas. Good news! She wasn’t violently ill! Plus, it apparently tastes like milk!If any of that sounds intriguing to you A2 Milk’s website lets you find retailers in your area along with recipes and testimonials. So milk A2 for all it’s worth.last_img read more

Some gamers might turn their nose up at the prospect of spending money on games that could easily (and illegally) be emulated or purchased piecemeal (and for over twice as much) on the Virtual Console, but it still looks like a rad little device. It’s $60 for 30 games that are almost 30 years old, but it’s also a half-sized NES with a full-size controller you can plug into a Wiimote for Virtual Console games, too!Back before GameFAQs and message boards, we had only a few sources for tips, walkthroughs, and cheat codes. And NES games were balls hard, so they were even more necessary then. Nintendo Power was the best for that, a monthly magazine Nintendo itself put out filled with maps and codes.Archive.org had Nintendo Power‘s first 15 years up for a few months, but Nintendo pulled a (legally defensible, arguably necessary in our current system of copyright protection) dick move and had them taken down. Still, there’s eBay, any old issues you might have in the basement, and a variety of digital means we can’t legally point you towards. So here are all the Nintendo Power issues you need to check out to get through all the games in the NES Classic Edition! The first issue of Nintendo Power came out after many of the early games on the system, so it’s pretty front-loaded. Gotham Returns and Brings Back the Dead

bzqtuqakw

first_img NYCC 18: The Cast of Gotham On Bane, Batman and Saying GoodbyeDC TV Comes to NYCC, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Grin & More DC News After the first half of the season’s relatively slow start, Gotham wasted no time getting to the action for its midseason premiere. This episode had pretty much everything that makes Gotham fun. There were plenty of villains, creepy foreshadowing, mob hits and of course, Jim Gordon making stupid decisions. The show begins with one of those, actually. Gordon decides to show up to Mario Falcone’s funeral. You know, his ex’s late husband and the son of gangster Carmine Falcone. Bullock shows up to tell Gordon just how terrible an idea this is. Bullock can talk some sense into Gordon, but not before Carmine sees him. This leads to Lee and Carmine deciding to put out a hit on Gordon. That means we get a very Zsasz-heavy episode. Zsasz is an underrated Batman villain, and one of my favorites in the comics. His gruesome kills and sadistic arrangement of bodies is terrifying. When Zsasz shows up on the page, you know something real messed up is about to happen. On Gotham, he’s been toned down a lot, but he’s still creepy. This version may rely on guns too much, but Anthony Carrigan knows how to unsettle you with just a look.Donal Logue and Ben McKenzie (Credit: Jeff Neumann/FOX.)In addition to dealing with Zsasz, Bullock and Gordon have to investigate a strange case involving the dead coming back to life. A woman who had been murdered by her boyfriend a few days prior was found dead again, having left the morgue to walk on the railroad tracks. When they question the morgue attendant, Gordon notices a hat with a strange logo on it. It’s a face with the words “Ha Ha Ha Ha” forming a bright red smile. Oh yes. He’s back. Or will be anyway. The detectives tail the attendant to a secret meeting in an abandoned theater. A group of Joker (or Jerome, in this case) cosplayers watch his old video messages to the city, having memorized every word.Gordon and Bullock break up the meeting and chase everyone outside. The morgue attendant is nowhere to be found. The investigation is cut short by Zsasz and his two assistants trying to murder Gordon. He leads the assassins into a restaurant, which gives us the episode’s big action scene. Gordon dives behind a kitchen counter, allowing him to deal with the threats one at a time. After using one of Zsasz’s assistants as a human shield (damn, Gordon), he beats Zsasz unconscious with a baking sheet. It’s a pretty cool-looking fight.Gordon and Bullock escape to Gordon’s home, but Zsasz follows close behind. He gets the drop on Bullock, but Gordon appears behind him with a shotgun. The standoff doesn’t last long. They’re interrupted by Carmine, who has been asked by Lee to call off the hit. Partly because she saw how insane Barnes had become since his infection, and partly because she still loves Gordon. With the hit called off, Bullock and Gordon survive to continue their investigation in the next episode. At the close, we learn that the morgue attendant is experimenting on dead bodies, with the ultimate goal of reviving Jerome.Cameron Monaghan as Jerome’s corpse in Gotham. (Photo: Screenshot via FOX)The detectives aren’t the only ones dealing with the return of the dead. While all that is going on, Penguin’s life is spiraling out of control. Nygma is nowhere to be found, and he doesn’t fully trust his deputy chief of staff. That lack of trust is exacerbated by what appears to be the ghost of Penguin’s father telling him not to trust “the birthday boy.” Penguin soon finds the corpse of his father has been dug up and put in his closet. He murders his deputy chief of staff and has a meltdown on national TV. His empire is starting to crumble. Of course, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Nygma is behind all this. It’s the first step in his elaborate revenge plan. The “ghost” was actually Clayface taking the form of Penguin’s father. Gotham is bringing back all the hits this week. The only storyline that doesn’t really go anywhere this week is Bruce’s. There’s a hint that shining a light through the owl statue they recovered the last episode does… something. We don’t see what. Their subplot this week focused on Selina’s relationship with her mom. Selina rejects her at first, angry about being abandoned at five years old. Bruce, who doesn’t want anyone else to miss out on having a family, convinces them to give each other a chance. Things go well until a man catches up to Selina’s mother and demands a large chunk of money. Selina mentions Bruce’s name and the man leaves to go after him instead. That’s all that happens for them. The second half of “Mad City” started off really strong. It had great action, some genuinely scary moments and a surprising amount of classic Batman villains. Even though it was pretty obvious that Nygma was behind all the weird stuff happening to Penguin, it still came as a surprise when the “ghost” was revealed to be Clayface. And I couldn’t be more excited for the return of the Joker/Jerome. It was smart of Gotham to keep Jerome in the background for so long. The presence of any Joker-like villain would overshadow all the other fun things the show has going for it. Now, three and a half seasons in, I’m ready for him to come back and I can’t wait to see what they do with him. Stay on targetlast_img read more

MCU News First Look at Cable David Hasselhoff Raps and More

Marvel put out a wonderfully tacky 1970s variety show-style music video for the end credits song, “Guardians Inferno.” The song was the only track on the Awesome Mix Vol. 2 album that wasn’t from the ’60s or ’70s. It was an original composition by director James Gunn featuring the rap stylings of one David Hasselhoff. And yes, he’s in the video. So if it wasn’t enough to listen to David Hasselhoff rap over the end credits of GOTG Vol. 2, you can watch him do it in a sparkly jumpsuit, surrounded by 70s production values. The video also features some top-notch dancing from the cast of GOTG Vol. 2, director James Gunn, and Stan Lee.That’s the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be available digitally on August 8, and on Blu-ray August 22.Not all is well in the MCU, unfortunately. Marvel’s new TV series Inhumans had its Television Critics Association press panel last weekend, and it… didn’t go well. The pilot has been screened for critics, and was largely panned. By most accounts, outside of Lockjaw who remains a very good boy, Inhumans is the hottest of messes. Comic book Movie reports that the cast and crew onstage were on the defensive and gave non-answers to questions about the show’s quality. Anson Mount, who plays Black Bolt, was asked how he felt about the negative reception and said the press made him feel like Ben Affleck after Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Oof.Tweets from reporters at the panel described it as uncomfortable, and like an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.  That #Inhumans panel was like a live table read on #CurbYourEnthusiasm— Tim Goodman (@BastardMachine) August 6, 2017At one point, Marvel head of television Jeph Loeb reportedly got a little testy with reporters after they kept asking about the show’s quality. He stressed multiple times that the show was not finished yet. When one reporter asked about Karnak’s storyline, which is reportedly so confusing many critics didn’t understand what his powers even were, Loeb responded that the finished product would make it clearer.“What you’ve seen so far is something that’s unfinished. Once you’ve seen the whole finished product, you actually do [understand].” Loeb reiterated the point when someone raised the issue of whether the visual quality of Inhumans would hold up on an IMAX screen, where it will premiere on September 1. “I can tell you that it was written on the material that you were given that the show that you have seen is not the finished product. If you’re asking me whether or not it was done, it’s not. So to be perfectly honest, I don’t understand your question.”Medusa actress Serinda Swan was forced to give the same answer when asked about Medusa’s hair. She says the CGI techniques used to animate her hair are brand new, and many of the special effects are being worked on right up until its September 1 premiere. “It’s never been done before, so there are going to be issues. There are going to be trials and tribulations. I think there was software that actually had to be built with it. If we only did things that were perfect we would never start and so it’s a phenomenal start.”Wow. Look, let’s assume that they’re all telling the truth, and the finished product will be remarkably better than what the critics in attendance at the panel saw. That’s still not a good look for a show that has its premiere in three weeks. Especially when that premiere is going to be on the largest possible movie screen, where any imperfections will be impossible to ignore. Also, nobody will care how new the tech is if the visual effects still look bad. Maybe in the three weeks between now and September 1, all this supposed unfinished work will get done and turn Inhumans into something great. But until that happens, there’s no reason to give them the benefit of the doubt given the footage they’ve released so far. Also, unfinished or not, they still deemed it good enough to show to critics for review. If the response isn’t what Marvel Television hoped for, that’s on them.Oh, also it was revealed at the panel that the version of the pilot shown in IMAX theaters on September 1 will be 75 minutes long. That’s nine minutes shorter than the version that will be shown for free on ABC on September 29. Man, there really isn’t any reason to pay to see this thing in IMAX is there? Though it could shed some light on the confusion critics faced regarding Karnak’s arc. Maybe those missing 9 minutes make his storyline (and powers) make sense?Honestly, this whole show is sounding worse the more we hear about it. At least there is some good news for Marvel Television on the horizon. Netflix’s The Defenders currently sits at 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. So at least Marvel has that going for it.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Ever since we learned that Josh Brolin was going to play Cable, we’ve been wondering what he’d look like. Sure, he’s in another popular series based on Marvel Comics, but his performance there is entirely CGI. Here, we’ll get to see his face. That makes a difference because Cable’s look is pretty iconic among X-Men fans. Early sketches of the character for Deadpool 2 looked promising, mostly because they looked like they’d be right at home on the comics page. But how would Brolin actually look in full Cable costume and makeup? As it turns out, pretty great.Ryan Reynolds tweeted out some photos of Brolin in full costume, and comics fans should be very happy. He looks tough, intimidating and most importantly, he looks like Cable. DeadPool 2: Your premium #Cable provider. #DeadPool2 pic.twitter.com/LboS0iVDqZ— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) August 7, 2017He certainly looks like a heavily-armed military dude. I do like the holstered teddy bear, though. Even futuristic cyborg mercenaries like to cuddle teddy bears. OK, it’s probably not for him. Most likely, this version of Cable is adapted from how he’s been portrayed in recent Marvel comics. He acts as a surrogate father to Hope Summers, an incredibly powerful mutant who can mimic other mutants’ powers and is a vessel of the Phoenix Force. If Deadpool 2 takes place when Hope is young, that would explain the teddy bear. How much of this will be in Deadpool 2 and how much of it is just set-up for the X-Force movie we don’t know. We are certain though, that it will be amazing fun to watch Deadpool annoy the crap out of this grumpy, heavily-armed mercenary from the future.Deadpool 2 will hit theaters next year, and its costumes look fantastic. Last week, Reynolds tweeted out a photo of Domino from the movie. Despite not being as comics-accurate as Cable, Zazie Beetz looks like the definition of cool in the role. StrawberryPicking Robots Will Definitely Take Your Job

ebggkxzpz

first_imgStay on target Another day, another step toward the robot revolution.Harvest CROO Robotics recently demonstrated an automated strawberry-picking machine, hell bent on replacing people in the fields. As described by NPR reporter Dan Charles, the computerized robotic optimized obtainer (CROO) is big as a bus, and wide enough to “straddle a dozen rows of strawberries at once.”Driven by autonomous technology, the contraption relies on high-definition cameras to detect berries, and a lineup of robotic claws to pick them.“Nobody’s telling it what to do,” Paul Bissett, chief operating officer at Harvest CROO Robotics, told the network. “It’s remembering its path down the row. It’s remembering where all these plants are.”A super-accurate GPS ensures the machine doesn’t trample the crops; when it reaches a vine, lights flash and cameras spin as computers capture stereo images of the strawberries. For all its pomp and circumstance, the vehicle doesn’t collect many fruits. But that is by design, according to Bissett, who claims that for their demonstration, the machine was programmed to grab just one berry per plant.Operating at normal conditions, the robots can find and pick more than 50 percent of the ripe berries—less than the 60 to 90 percent achieved by a typical work crew. The strawberry-picking robot awaits its turn (via Dan Charles/NPR)“You kind of learn, when you get into this—it’s really hard to match what humans can do,” Harvest CROO Robotics co-founder Bob Pitzer admitted.A former development engineer for Intel, Pitzer reasons that “it was a lot easier to make semiconductor chips” than program strawberry-picking bots.As with most industrial robots, though, there are advantages: The apparatus can work through the night (when berries are cooler and less fragile, NPR said) and pick up to eight acres in a day.Still in the prototype phase, the harvester is forecast to fill fields within two years: Good news for farmers, bad news for farm workers. The Harvest CROO Robotics website expects each machine to replace at least 30 pickers.“It could happen. Put a man on the moon, didn’t we?” harvester Jose Santos told NPR, oddly optimistic about robots taking over his job.The crew leader is convinced that picking strawberries will always require human intervention. After all, who’s going to fix the vehicles when they break down? Besides, a little automated help never hurt anyone.“You could afford to give people a day off, you know,” Santos said. “Afternoons off, holidays off. If you have machines behind you.”In September, R&D company Octinion unveiled a next-generation strawberry-picking robot, able to cull one piece of fruit every three seconds. Second Patient Cleared of HIV After StemCell Therapy

first_img A second person appears to be in remission from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after receiving a stem-cell transplant first used a decade ago.Experts from the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford replaced the patient’s white blood cells with HIV-resistant versions from a rare donor.Following a successful transplant, a male patient in the UK—whose identity has not been disclosed—was able to stop taking antiretroviral drugs (ARV, the standard treatment for HIV). Eighteen months later, there was still no sign of the virus. The same stem-cell technique was used 10 years ago on Timothy Ray Brown, known as the “Berlin patient.” The latest patient, diagnosed with HIV in 2003, suffered from advanced Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer that wasn’t responding to chemotherapy.Like Brown, he required a bone-marrow transplant, in which blood cells are destroyed and replenished with those from a healthy donor. The medical team, led by Ravindra Gupta, an infectious disease physician at Cambridge, described the results in a paper published this week by the journal Nature.“At the moment the only way to treat HIV is with medications that suppress the virus, which people need to take for their entire lives, posing a particular challenge in developing countries,” Gupta said in a statement.“Finding a way to eliminate the virus entirely is an urgent global priority,” he continued. “But is particularly difficult because the virus integrates into the white blood cells of its host.”Nearly 37 million people worldwide live with HIV, yet only 59 percent receive ARV.It’s too early to say whether the patient has been “cured.” That, according to Gupta, can only be demonstrated if his blood remains HIV-free for longer. Eighteen months after ending ARV therapy, though, there were no signs of the virus returning.Which is great news for the unnamed man, who, one can only hope, has a new lease on life. Heck, maybe he’ll team up with Brown for a buddy cop show.“By achieving remission in a second patient using a similar approach, we have shown that the Berlin patient was not an anomaly, and that it really was the treatment approaches that eliminated HIV in these two people,” Gupta said. Not everyone can be so lucky, though. (If you consider it lucky to have cancer that requires a sometimes-fatal bone-marrow transplant.)Researchers caution that this specific approach is not sustainable as a standard HIV treatment.“If you’re well, the risk of having a bone-marrow transplant is far greater than the risk of staying on tablets every day,” Graham Cooke, a clinical researcher at Imperial College London, said.Folks in need of a transplant to nurse leukemia or other diseases, however, may want to look into a donor with the CCR5 mutation, which Cooke said won’t add any risk to the procedure.More on Geek.com:Genome Editor CRISPR Targets AIDS Virus HIVAn HIV Vaccine Inches CloserFDA Warns Against Young Blood Transfusions As Medical TreatmentHow the AIDS Crisis Influenced Science Fiction CRISPR-Modified Babies Cursed With Short LifespanRogue Scientist Defends Gene-Edited Babies Stay on targetlast_img read more

They will now live out the rest of their lives in the sanctuary at Klettsvik Bay on the island of Heimaey, located off the southern coast of Iceland. What a week!Little White and Little Grey completed the 6,000 miles from China to Iceland – watch the monumental journey with @Cargolux_Intl here! pic.twitter.com/Ry4nqexcTT— Beluga Sanctuary (@BelugaSanctuary) June 21, 2019The first of its kind, the sanctuary was created to rehabilitate captive dolphins and whales. The conservation charity SEA LIFE TRUST, which has been at the forefront of the project, said the bay was selected to “provide a more natural sub-Arctic environment and wilder habitat for these amazing whales to call home.”The logistical challenge of transporting two beluga whales by air, land and sea was carefully planned by a team of global experts. The 6,000-mile journey took 30 hours to complete. One of the whales in an aquarium in China before being transported to its new home in Iceland. (Photo Credit: SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary)Each beluga was individually lifted onto specially designed stretchers and placed into specially built transportation boxes before they were lifted out of the aquarium by crane and loaded into two lorries. Little Grey and Little White then traveled by road to Pu Dong International airport, where they boarded a specially chartered cargo plane, a Boeing 747-400ERF that flew them to Keflavik Airport in Iceland. After the flight, the belugas were transported to a ferry to Heiamey Island and transferred to the beluga sanctuary landside facility and placed into a special care pool for assessment, before their release into the open-water sanctuary. The sanctuary is at Klettsvik Bay on the island of Heimaey, located off the southern coast of Iceland. (Photo Credit: SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary)In the facility, the whales will be part of a training program to prepare them for release and help them put on extra blubber to get used to colder North Atlantic waters.“It’s important for us to help the whales to acclimatize to a much colder and natural environment where they will need to adapt to freezing temperatures, the local fauna, wildlife and much deeper waters,” said Mark Todd, an independent marine mammal behavior expert and consultant on the SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary.Little Grey and Little White will take part in a training program to prime them for release into the bay. (Photo Credit: SEA LIFE TRUST Beluga Whale Sanctuary)To help Little Grey and Little White gain confidence for interacting with the local fauna and wildlife in the bay, the project team will carefully introduce them to creatures such as crabs and other shellfish as well plant life such as sea kelp found in the local area. They will also take part in training designed to increase their fitness and ability to hold their breath underwater for longer in the deeper waters. The whales are originally from Russian Arctic waters and it is believed they were two or three years old when captured.UPDATE Over the weekend Little White and Little Greyhave been eating well and have settled into their care pool nicely. They’ll stay in their temporary home under quarantine for 40+ days, until theyare ready to be moved to their permanent open water home! pic.twitter.com/HIZ3HL5U9m— Beluga Sanctuary (@BelugaSanctuary) June 25, 2019More than 3,000 whales and dolphins are kept in captivity and conservationists are hoping that up to eight other belugas could join Little Grey and Little White in the future.“The world’s first whale sanctuary represents a pathway to the end of the keeping of whales and dolphins confined for entertainment,” said Cathy Williamson, Whale and Dolphin Conservation’s End Captivity Programme Policy Manager.More on Geek.com:Photographer Captures ‘Horrific’ Photo of Whale With Sliced-Off Tail After Boat StrikeWatch: Humpback Whale Swims With Dolphins Off Irish CoatOne of the World’s Rarest Whales Recorded Singing fo First Timelast_img read more
