First Nations have ability to paralyze country by shutting down trade routes

first_imgAPTN National NewsThe commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police has taken to YouTube to defend his department’s handling of the Idle No More movement in light of criticism thrown at it by the courts and media.Ontario’s top cop said it’s important to understand the overall strategy and that First Nations hold a lot of the power.“First Nations have the ability to paralyze this country by shutting down travel and trade routes,” said Chris Lewis in the video posted Tuesday morning. “It is a difficult situation no matter how we view or address it.”Lewis said there have been more than 60 demonstrations to date under the Idle No More banner and there hasn’t been a report of a single injury to a protestor, member of the public or officer. The OPP was criticized last week by Ontario Superior Court Justice David Brown after failing to respond to a court injunction in Tyendinaga where a small group of Mohawks shutdown the Via Rail line for seven hours.Justice Brown also slammed police in Sarnia for not acting on two injunctions he issued to have a blockade removed there. In both cases, the protestors removed the blockade and police refused to move in on them.In Tyendinaga, the OPP said it was “too dangerous” to respond to the injunction. The protestors said they made the right choice because if they had they would have stayed longer and if they would have tried to make arrests there would have been a fight.Lewis said arrests will be made after the protests if warranted. Police told Tyendinaga protestors they were under investigation for mischief.“These concepts and strategies developed from experience, hard work and common sense are difficult and complex to explain to the general public,” said Lewis.last_img read more

Kohli not shrewd franchise skipper cant be compared to Dhoni Rohit

first_imgNew Delhi: Virat Kohli is not a “shrewd captain” who could be compared to his national team deputy Rohit Sharma or former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who have won three IPL titles each, feels former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir. The former India opener, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL trophies in 2012 and 2014, feels that in result oriented franchise environment, Kohli has been “lucky” to have survived despite Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) never winning the coveted title in his eight years as skipper. “I don’t see him as a shrewd captain. I don’t see him as a tactful captain (tactician). And he hasn’t won the IPL. So ultimately, a captain is only as good as his record,” Gambhir told on host broadcasters’ ‘Star Sports’ show ‘GamePlan’. Gambhir’s comments is specific to Kohli’s success as a leader in IPL since he is the first captain who has led India to a Test series win on Australian soil. “There are people who have won the trophy three times. MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. So I think he has a long way to go. You cannot compare him to someone like Rohit or Dhoni at this stage,” Gambhir said. “He has been a part of RCB, and captaining RCB for the last seven to eight years, and he has been very lucky and should be thanking the franchise that they stuck with him. Because not many captains have got such a long rope where they haven’t won a tournament,” said Gambhir, who had to part ways with KKR in 2018 after seven long years and two titles.last_img read more

Team Columbus downs Team Cleveland in the Battle for Ohio basketball game

Matchups that Ohio basketball fans could only dream of became a reality on the Ohio State campus Saturday. It was an all-Buckeye State theme during the Ohio Homecoming Battle for Ohio basketball game at St. John Arena, which saw Team Columbus eek out a 94-91 victory against Team Cleveland. The game saw former OSU teammates David Lighty and Jon Diebler guarding each other on the perimeter as well as university alumnus and Philadelphia 76er Evan Turner run the court with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Tristan Thompson. Thompson was dominant in the contest, leading all scorers in the game with a double-double that included 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting and 10 rebounds for Team Cleveland. Team Columbus countered with a team-high 18 points from Ron Lewis and 17 points from Turner. A coaching staff that included former No. 1-overall NBA Draft pick Greg Oden, former OSU player Ron Stokes and Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman saw five players hit double digits on the way to the victory for the Columbus squad. Afterward, Turner called the contest a great game and a great opportunity to lock horns with former teammates and current NBA foes. Turner, who had fourth-quarter shots blocked by former OSU teammate Dallas Lauderdale and came up smiling after each rejection, called the game “fun.” “It’s great for the city,” Turner said. “Hopefully we keep doing this game every single year.” The high-paced celebrity All-Star game saw Team Cleveland control the opening eight minutes of play, but only until J.J. Sullinger, older brother of recently-drafted OSU product Jared Sullinger, struck for Team Columbus. J.J. Sullinger, sporting a thicker build than during his playing days at OSU during the 2004-2006 seasons, stuck a 3-pointer home to give Columbus the lead, 22-21, late in the first quarter. Columbus pulled ahead by half behind Turner’s 14 first-half points. Diebler, in a display familiar to OSU fans, connected on 2-of-3 3-pointers while contributing six points to the Team Columbus effort. Diebler’s day from behind the arc was just getting started. During halftime, Diebler dominated the 3-point shooting contest by scoring 5-of-5 shots on his first rack of balls before doing the same on his final rack to win the competition. Diebler defeated Dru Joyce, a high school teammate of the Miami Heat’s Lebron James at St. Vincent-St. Mary’s and player at Akron from 2003-2007. The 3-pointers for Diebler were his first in a competitive game at St. John Arena since a December 2010 win against South Carolina. Of the game and his return to St. John Arena, Diebler, a member of the winning Team Columbus side, said that he too enjoyed himself. “We were talking before the game – it was pretty awesome to get everyone together,” he said. “It was great to be back. I love this gym.” Scoring slowed in the second half – the two squads combined for 32 points in the fourth quarter – but Team Columbus forced a turnover in the closing seconds as it defended a 93-91 lead and held on for the win. Former OSU forward Dallas Lauderdale, a member of the losing Team Cleveland side, agreed with the rest, saying that the game was a memorable one. “I thought it was a great time. Playing against former teammates – it was a lot of fun,” Lauderdale said. Lauderdale, who is returning from playing professionally in Poland and will compete with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors in summer league play, added that Saturday’s game was reminiscent of practice sessions during his time at OSU. “It wasn’t weird going against (former teammates) at all,” he said. “We did it every day at the Schottenstein Center, so to be able to go out there and talk a little trash, it was fun.” There was statewide appeal for the Saturday event with cities and towns from around Ohio represented on the two teams’ respective rosters. In addition to J.J. Sullinger, Turner and Diebler, Team Columbus featured former OSU letter winners Brian Brown (1999-2002), Terence Dials(2002-2006) and George Reese (1999-2000) as well as Scoonie Penn and Columbus natives Antonio Daniels and Samaki Walker. Team Cleveland featured former Buckeyes Lighty (2007-2011), Lauderdale (2008-2011), Tony Stockman (2004-2005) and Damon Stringer (1995-1998; Cleveland State 1998-2000) in addition to Thompson, Keith McLeod (Bowling Green, 1999-2002) and Ryan Patton (Youngstown State 1999-2002). read more

Bonnier Acquires Sport Diver UK

first_imgSport Diver UK has a print audience of 10,000 and digital audience of about 150,000 monthly unique visitors. “We hope to get it about the same size as that we are in the U.S.—175,000 in print and almost 1 million in monthly unique visitors,” says Freygang. “The amount of divers in that region is equivalent to what’s in the Americas, but in partnering with PADI and marketing to that diving database hopefully, in five to six years, we’ll get to that level.”In advertising, Sport Diver UK is at roughly 600 pages, which is pretty good given the size of its audience, and currently collects about $1.5 million in total revenue.“Our opportunity is really to grow that and go beyond the U.K.,” contends Freygang. “Ultimately we think Germany makes sense as a market to go into, France and Spain.”The magazine’s editorial and advertising staffs will remain intact. Bonnier says plans are in place to have both the U.S. and U.K. teams behind Sport Diver and Sport Diver UK collaborate on future projects with special issues like “World’s Best Diving & Resorts” and an annual “Gear Guide” title.“In pairing, we want to look for content synergies between the brands,” says Freygang. The next step for Bonnier is taking the Sport Diver brand expansion into Europe and strengthening its relationship with PADI in the Asia Pacific market, specifically.“We want to introduce a print product there, so we might look for a partner—Australia probably makes sense,” Freygang says. “For the time being, that’s where our focus will be.” Bonnier Corp. extended its dive market portfolio by acquiring Sport Diver UK, an international magazine that mirrors its own U.S.-based Sport Diver brand. Bonnier CEO Dave Freygang would not divulge the terms of the deal, but did say the move to purchase the title was very strategic in the company’s efforts to grow their U.S. brand’s global presence.Sport Diver UK grows Bonnier’s portfolio of dive market titles including Scuba Diving, The Undersea Journal, produced in partnership with The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), and the digital-only Sport Diver Asia Pacific launched last year.“The opportunity is to take our Sport Diver brand, which we operate as the official publication of the PADI diving society in the Americas, into the Europe, Middle East and Africa region,” Freygang says. “We’ll start in the U.K., which is one of the largest diving communities in that region, and ultimately expand.”Freygang contends it made more sense for Bonnier to acquire Sport Diver UK than it did for Sport Diver to expand into the market unknown, especially considering the name confusion.last_img read more

BNP not optimistic about Jaishankars visit

first_imgBNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.BNP on Monday said there is no reason for Bangladesh to provide its land to India in Brahmanbaria to expand Agartala airport, reports UNB.”There’ve been media reports about it (India’s desire to use Bangladeshi land in Brahmanbaria). We’re closely observing the matter,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He further said, “Bangladesh government hasn’t agreed yet, and there’s no question about providing any land. There’s no reason to give our land to any other country.”Fakhrul came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after placing wreaths at BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s grave along with leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal, marking its 39th founding anniversary.Media reports said India wants a piece of Bangladesh’s land in Brahmanbaria to expand the Agartala airport, but the country is yet to make any proposal in this regard.Fakhrul said their party is not ‘optimistic’ about getting any positive outcome to resolve the outstanding problems with India from the visit of its external affairs minister S Jaishankar.”We’ve been hearing for 10-12 years that the Awami League government’s relation with India reached the highest level, but we still didn’t get the fair share of water from the Teesta River. Border killing could not be stopped while no step has been taken to remove the trade deficit with India,” he said. The BNP leader said Bangladesh’s no pending issue with India has so far been resolved. “But India solved its own problems with us. That’s why we can’t be optimistic and we also don’t expect much from this visit.”S Jaishankar is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Monday night to discuss bilateral issues and prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming visit to India.Fakhrul protested prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s remark involving Zia with the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 15 August 1975, saying the ruling party is trying to distort history.”It’s historical fact that Ziaur Rahman in no way was involved with the assassination. Their people (AL leaders) were involved with it (the murder of Bangabandhu). Those who formed the government and parliament after the assassination were involved with it,” he observed.Fakhrul criticised industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun as he accused BNP of involving in rawhide disaster, and said the minister made such an imprudent comment to hide his failure. He said the current government has failed to run the country as it lacks people’s mandate. “There’s no representative of people both in the government and parliament. The unelected ministers have nothing to do except making unguarded remarks.”The BNP leader alleged that the government is trying to be the ‘master’ of people by eliminating politics and political parties. “They want the country to be run by a single party, but people won’t let it happen.”He warned that people will surely restore democracy in the country through a movement as they did in the past.last_img read more

Mayors Office Pushes Back on Council Cuts to Budget During Roundtable

first_imgBy George Kevin Jordan, AFRO Staff WriterThe Mayor’s office pushed back against several cuts the D.C. Council proposed. Those cuts impact the city’s most vulnerable residents in many ways official said this week. City Administrator Rashad M. Young said, “We are concerned that there are some changes recommended by the committee that impact critical programs and investments and in some respects disproportionately impacts those residents in our community who are most vulnerable and require the safety net we’re investing in.”City Administrator Rashad M. Young spoke on behalf of the mayor’s office about concerns proposed in the D.C. Council’s budget. (Courtesy Photo)The top priority of concern were cuts that would impact housing. For instance the committee would:Reverse the policy that dedicates 15 percent of deed recordation and deed transfer tax revenue to the Housing Production Fund. According to the mayor’s office this is the primary way to create affordable housing. Through the Housing Preservation Fund the District has been able to create some 5600 new units of affordable housing, since 2015. The mayor’s office said as a result of the cuts 100 new affordable housing units will not be built.Cut $3 million from the Housing Preservation Fund. This cut digs into the way the District keeps affordable housing. According to the mayor’s office because of the Housing Preservation fund the city has been able to preserve 878 units in affordable housing across eight projects in Ward’s 1,4, 7 and 8.Another big hit is in the area of jobs. The committee cuts include:Slashing $2.2 million from MPD budget, which will result in a hiring freeze according to the mayor’s office.Another cut of $1 million in funds for correctional officers at the Jail, would reduce hiring at the jail. The biggest cut regarding work are the committees $17.4 million from employment and workforce development programs beginning in 2021. This cut would end Project Empowerment, Career Connections and the adult job training programs. The Mayor’s office said the cuts would impact over 1,400 residents. Other cuts that could impact vulnerable communities in wards 5, 7  and 8 include a $2.1 million cut for Neighborhood Prosperity Fund, which was used to help bring in groceries and other healthy food options to those areas. Next summer some 1,400 summer camp slots would be cut as a result of the $522,000 cut to the Department of Parks and Recreation. About one third of those slots were for kids in Wards 7 and 8.The mayor’s office also butted against the reduction of United Medical Center’s operating subsidy from $40 million to $15 million which the office contended would only be achieved by reduction of services and job cuts. It wasn’t all bad, as Young pointed out when questioned during the roundtable discussion with reporters. Mayoral officials did admit to receiving about 90 percent of what they wanted from the budget. “They did lots of things that were good,” Young said pointing toward the Workforce Housing Fund, and Homeward D.C., where little change has been made.“I think we want to communicate with some of the members [about] some of the impacts to what they have done,” Young said. “Hopefully we can work with the Council in partnership to make some changes.” According to D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute the FY 2020 Budget Season is a long and sometime contentious journey. There has been public discourse and debate about the FY 2020 since earlier in the year. The first budget vote is schedule for May 14 and the second budget vote is scheduled for May 28. This week the D.C. Council is in budget work sessions.last_img read more

Designed for function and mobility, they will feature flexible furnishings for increased socializing opportunities, upgraded bathroom experiences and tech-forward, ‘clever cabin’ touches.More news:  Kory Sterling is TL Network Canada’s new Sales Manager CanadaVirgin has already teased its dining options and luxe-focused RockStar Suites. For the cabins, “We wanted … a place people actually wanted to hang out in,” says Jamie Douglas, Senior Product Design Manager, Virgin Voyages. “The cabin feels like a reflection of modern city living. A design that works harder with what are normally constricted spaces.”To counter what it calls the boxiness of traditional sea cabins, an exclusive patent pending cabin layout was born in partnership with Pearson Lloyd Design of London. The layout uses intelligent architecture to optimize space with an angled wall. Though hardly detectable, the angled wall “vastly alters” the room, says Virgin.Another innovation is the Seabed, the first-ever transformational cabin bed at sea, specially engineered and handcrafted by German-based, Walter Knoll designers.SeaBed in Day ModeSustainability was another consideration. PIR presence detectors with eco modes were added, where air-conditioning, lighting and curtain settings auto-adjust for energy conservation when a passenger steps out of the cabin. If there’s a phone charging in the room, power still stay on for the phone but switch off for everything else. All of the technology can be controlled on the in-room tablet.SeaBed in Night ModeSome 93% of the cabins have sea views, and 86% have sea terraces with outdoor hammocks for lounging beneath the stars. That includes an XL Sea Terrace option for more added room and terrace space.Terrace at NightThere’s also a variety of Insider Cabins with solo options for more personal travel, as well as loft-style, bunk bed lined Social Insider cabins for groups.More news:  Direct Travel names Smith as Senior VP, Leisure Marketing, North AmericaVirgin says most of Scarlet Lady’s standard cabins will have transitional Seabeds, sustainably sourced, hand-woven hammocks, sensory mood lighting, in-room entertainment with 43”+ 4K flat-screen HDTVs, minibars, ‘glam areas’, flexible wardrobes and premium products in upgraded bathrooms with rainshowers. << Previous PostNext Post >>last_img read more
